But the yak, an extraordinary cousin in the bovine family, offers one of the world’s most exceptional natural fibers.
Yaks hail from Tibet, and they grow ultra fine fibers to reduce heat loss in order to survive harsh winters above 4000 km in altitude.
Wool makes up about 1% of the global raw textile production. Goat cashmere makes up about 0.02% of the global raw textile production, while yak cashmere makes up about 0.0017% of the global raw textile production. It is 600 times more scarce than wool, and 12 times more scarce than goat cashmere.
